You know what’s fun? Being an English major and a cartoon fan.
I could go on, but I won’t.
YO THIS IS SO COOL
That weird 10 seconds of good animation in an episode always weirds me out.
fun fact: “Some Enchanted Evening” was actually supposed to be the pilot for The Simpsons, but the original animation from korea was so horrible it had to be scrapped
I liked that Simpson style, it was a lot more dynamic with stretch-and-squatch.
I miss this whole era
Some Pearl fighting from a section of ‘Gem Glow’ that I boarded. It was planned from the beginning that each of the gems fighting styles would be based on a specific dance form to reflect their personalities, so that even without speaking, we already know a little about them.
REMINDER THAT LAIKA’S FIRST FILM SOLELY PRODUCED BY THEIR STUDIO HAD TWO FEMALE CHARACTERS AS THEIR ANTAGONIST AND PROTAGONIST WHO, BY SOME FORM OF DEVIL MAGIC, HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FACES
REMINDER THAT LAIKA’S SECOND FILM NOT ONLY CONSISTED OF A CAST WITH FOUR CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTERS BUT INCLUDED AN ENTIRE TOWN OF DIVERSE CITIZENS OF VARYING RACE, GENDER, AND AGE. LIKE A NORMAL TOWN HAS.
REMINDER THAT LAIKA’S THIRD FILM FEATURED SAME SEX COUPLES IN THEIR TEASER TRAILER
REMINDER THAT THIS IS ALL STOP-MOTION SO EVERY CHARACTER WAS DESIGNED, MODELED, SCULPTED, RIGGED, AND EVEN HAD TINY CLOTHES SEWED FOR THEM.
also reminder that they make chump change compared to disney who whines and cries that in all their years of experience they can’t handle the prospect of animating a girl with a face different than the rest and that it’s “too hard” because only females can express such a wide range of emotions that it makes them difficult to animate
if a studio with 20-30 years of experience can manage this then SURELY an established studio with NEAR 100 YEARS of experience can maybe, just maybe, include a female that ISN’T a part of their formula
side-note but ALL THIS is a good reason why I will forever love and support Laika
Little Freak (2013)
Directed by Edwin Schaap
A young deformed boy lives as a side-show freak. When his father asks him to make a birthday-wish he starts to imagine…
It’s a metaphor for the expectation some parents have with their children, without seeing that they have other ambitions and their own dreams.
The character animation in this short is simply stunning!
Ever After High™ - The Cat Who Cried Wolf (by EverAfterHigh)
Haha! Kitty reminds me of Toralei on this one, I want her as doll!
I hate to use this phrase, but after this I kinda ship Raven and Cerise
this episode is such an amazing breakdown of all the grossness inherent to the Nice Guy and friend zone concepts so popular with the media. and dang! when he publicly invites her to the big dance, and she wants to say no but she feels like she can’t because everyone else is watching and explicitly waiting for her to say yes (because they all think of gideon as this sweet darling who deserves whatever he wants) — what a great, precise criticism of everything that’s yeeky about public proposal
I… really have to watch this show…
Gravity Falls is a really good show.
Uncle Grandpa was cute! I don’t think I like it any more or less than the original pilot, I just kinda view them as separate things. The pilot was hilarious and very gritty but definitely a little too rough around the edges ( art/comedy style, there was nothing sloppy about the course of the show itself ) for that time slot. The way it’s been revamped still resembles the original in some ways but it’s a lot softer now. The characters are drawn more soft, there’s no portly, basement dwelling, acne riddled, sweating teenage boys lactating at the mention of super computers in this version. The monsters and general ghoulies are depicted a lot softer as well, with the inclusion of companion monsteresque characters ( The glum creature of The Black Lagoon styled character Gus and Pizza Steve ). Either way so far it seems really cute and I’m glad UG got the green light for a series, even if they did have to make some compromises.
